What to Expect During Your Implant Consultation
During your consultation with us, we’ll discuss several important health factors related to whether you’re eligible for dental implants. We’ll discuss which teeth need treatment, explore alternatives that may be better suited, and take scans and X-rays to ensure your jaw bones are strong enough for implant placement.
We’ll also review your treatment plan, including how we’ll move forward and what kind of timeline you can expect to follow. Healing from implant surgery completely generally takes several months, but this level of commitment often brings long-lasting results and benefits.
Preparing for Implant Surgery
If you need to get a tooth extracted before getting your implant, this may need to occur sometime before surgery. Additionally, if you’re a patient who needs a bone graft, the graft will be placed ahead of your surgery date and carefully examined over time as the bone integrates and hardens . The bone graft will continue to strengthen and heal over at least three months, though some individuals must wait longer.
However, rest assured you will not have to wait longer than necessary. If a bone graft is left alone for too long, it may shrink and no longer add enough bone for the implant to fuse with. Therefore, you should work closely with your dental team to ensure everything grows properly and goes according to plan.
What Happens During Implant Surgery?
Following any necessary preparations, you’ll be able to undergo surgery. During implant surgery, most patients will be put under local anesthetic, though some may prefer deeper sedation and receive IV sedation instead. After you’re sufficiently numb and sedated, the process begins.
Using a fully guided approach, we’ll precisely place the implant without the need for an incision. A small opening is created in the gum tissue, and a pre-planned pathway allows us to position the implant—a screw-like titanium post—directly into the jawbone. This allows the implant to fuse with the jawbone, increasing its overall stability and ensuring it’s durable for years after fully healing.
Afterward, we’ll place the abutment onto the implant, supporting the crown that mimics your natural tooth. You may need to come in for an additional appointment to get your abutment placed.
Healing and Recovering From Implant Surgery
While you’ll likely recover and feel relatively back to normal within a couple of days , most implants take three to six months to heal and integrate with the jawbone completely.
During healing, your dental team may give you a temporary crown. The temporary crown will look like your tooth but may not be a perfect match for the rest of your natural chompers. Following healing, you’ll be able to get your permanent crown, which will be bonded to the implant.
To promote comfort and speedy recovery, we encourage you to focus on resting, eating softer foods, and maintaining good oral hygiene routines. You should also refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol.
